9 tips for a hassle-free house move

Category Helpful Hints

Selling and moving to a new home can be both an exciting and stressful time, so it actually helps if the move itself is hassle-free.

Moving time is the perfect time to get rid of all the things that you don’t need.

As such, it’s always prudent to plan your move well in advance. This way, you’ll be able to use your time wisely.

When looking for a moving company, consider how much it will cost you and whether they charge by the hour or per job. Look at what other services they offer: will they offload the boxes once they are at the new house or will you have to pay for this separately? Most importantly, check if the company has insurance.

Lesley Moyo from Tidylifesa shares some home moving tips…

1. Now’s the time to declutter

Moving time is the perfect time to get rid of all the things that you don’t need.

Look through your belongings and start ‘weeding’ out items that are old or damaged.

You might also want to cash in on this move by selling any items that no longer fit in with your lifestyle. Just make sure that these are still in good working condition.

The next step involves buying supplies that will help with the move. You’ll need thick sellotape, bubble wrap, a pair of scissors, labelling markers and lots of boxes.

Alternatively, you can give away household furnishing and clothing to someone in need. Approach your local church, school or NGO to make a donation.

Once you’re done clearing out the clutter, you’ll have a rough idea of how much stuff you own.

2.  Get some supplies

The next step involves buying supplies that will help with the move. You’ll need thick sellotape, bubble wrap, a pair of scissors, labelling markers and lots of boxes.

3. Label your boxes

Clearly label your boxes correctly to avoid having to look for things at your new place.

Use bubble wrap or newspaper to protect fragile items that are made of glass, porcelain, china etc.

4. Keep valuables safe

If you own valuables like jewellery, cash and important documents, don’t pack them in the boxes that will be transported by the moving trucks, rather transport these in your own car.

Map out your new home. With the ‘map’ in place, you can instruct the movers on where to place large pieces of furniture.

5. Return borrowed items

Return any borrowed items to your neighbours before you leave.

6. Leave a clean house

Make sure that you leave the house clean. If possible, hire a cleaning company to clean the property after you have removed everything.

7. Don’t forget anything

Before leaving the house you’re selling for the last time, walk through the property, room by room, to make sure that you’re not leaving anything behind.

8. Map out your new home

Have a look and take a walk around your new home so you can map out where you’re going to put your furniture. With the ‘map’ in place, you can instruct the movers on where to place large pieces of furniture.

9. Send a forwarding address

Notify your service providers that you’ll be changing address so that your mail comes to your new home.
